Parish Fair 21 March 2009
We enjoyed another very successful fair on Saturday 21 March in the grounds of St Mary’s Church in Geraldiine. Various forecasts had warned of poor weather put the rain went around Geraldine and we did not have to decamp into the church! As ever a great deal of effort had gone into planning the day and many thanks are due to Tom Pike and his team of helpers. There was a huge quantity of second hand domestic items, an extraordinary amount of “White Elephant” paraphanalia, an amazing range of clothing and shoes, a fascinating collection of toys and books, and some delicious baking and preserves. And there were four different raffles and the chocolate wheel (the wheel was spun almost sixty times for various joints of lamb contributed on the hoof by a number of our local farmers) all of which were well supported.
There was a different atmosphere than for the last three years at least as Diana Musgrave, Hugh McCafferty and Fi Kennedy provided a number of children’s stalls which created a lot of entertainment and laughter for both the children and adults. The children were also among the main customers at the sausage and bacon buttie stall – George Hayhoe (9) had at least seven bacon butties! The appetites of the adults were catered for by the provision of quite delicious Devonshire Teas.
As ever the aim of the day was to raise money for parish funds and the take was up by 10% at over $5000. Again many thanks to everyone who gave of their time on the day and to those many who gave items or produce for the various raffles and stalls.
